The Science Behind IPL & Laser Treatments

How Do IPL & Laser Treatments Actually Work?


At the heart of most light-based treatments is a principle called selective photothermolysis.


Put simply, different structures within our skin absorb different wavelengths of light. By carefully selecting the right technology, wavelength and treatment settings, we can direct light energy towards a particular target, such as pigment within a hair or haemoglobin within a blood vessel.


Once absorbed, that light energy is converted into heat. The heat creates a controlled response within the targeted area, while the surrounding skin is left largely unaffected.


It's this ability to be so precise that allows laser treatments to address very different concerns, despite all being based around the same fundamental principle.



Meet The Targets - Melanin & Haemoglobin


So, how does the light know what to target?


Within the skin, there are substances known as chromophores. These absorb particular wavelengths of light, a little like certain colours attracting more heat from sunlight than others.


Two of the most important chromophores when it comes to light-based treatments are melanin and haemoglobin.


Melanin is the pigment responsible for colour in our skin and hair. Haemoglobin, meanwhile, is found within our blood.


By choosing technology designed to target one of these substances, we can treat concerns ranging from unwanted hair and pigmentation to visible blood vessels.


Here's where that science becomes really interesting.



Targeting Hair - Laser Hair Removal


With laser hair removal, the target is the melanin inside the hair.


The laser emits light that is absorbed by this pigment. That light energy is converted into heat, which travels down the hair and damages the follicle responsible for producing it.


Over a course of treatments, this reduces the follicle's ability to produce new hair, resulting in progressively less regrowth.


So why can't we treat every hair in one appointment?


Hair moves through several stages of a natural growth cycle, and laser is most effective when a hair is actively growing and still connected to the follicle. At any one time, only a proportion of your hairs will be in this stage.


This is why effective laser treatments are carefully spaced over several appointments. Each session gives us the opportunity to target another group of actively growing hairs, gradually creating smoother, longer-lasting results.



Targeting Pigmentation - IPL Photo Facials


Pigmentation gives us another example of how light can be used in an entirely different way.


IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a laser, which typically delivers a specific wavelength of light, IPL uses a broader spectrum of wavelengths.


During an IPL photo facial, pulses of light are absorbed by areas containing excess melanin, like sun spots, age spots and areas of pigmentation.


The absorbed light converts into heat, breaking down the targeted pigment. Over the days following treatment, these areas can temporarily appear darker before the pigment gradually rises towards the surface and naturally sheds away.


IPL can also target redness and visible vessels, making it particularly useful when we're looking to improve overall skin tone and clarity rather than focusing on one isolated concern.


Depending on the treatment and settings used, light-based technology can also stimulate processes associated with collagen production, helping to support the overall appearance and quality of the skin.



Targeting Blood Vessels - Thread Vein Removal


For thread vein removal, we're looking for something different again.


This time, our target is haemoglobin within the blood vessel.


Light energy is directed towards the visible vessel and absorbed by the haemoglobin inside it. This generates controlled heat, causing the vessel to coagulate and close.


Once that vessel is no longer functioning, the body gradually breaks it down and absorbs it through its natural processes. Over time, the visible thread vein fades from view.


The surrounding skin remains largely unaffected because the technology is specifically designed to deliver energy to the intended target.



What's The Difference Between IPL & Laser?


IPL and laser are often grouped together, but they're not quite the same thing.


A laser typically delivers a focused wavelength of light selected for a particular target. IPL, on the other hand, uses a broader spectrum of light and filters this energy depending on the concern being treated.


That doesn't mean one is automatically better than the other.


Think of them as different tools designed for different jobs. The most appropriate technology depends on what we're treating, where we're treating it and the individual characteristics of your skin.


That's why you'll find multiple technologies within the Optimas Max by InMode, rather than one single device trying to treat every concern in exactly the same way.
