Your 5 Step Evening Skincare Routine For Healthy Skin

Updated: Jun 24

Whether you’re winding down after a hectic day or preparing for a rejuvenating night’s sleep, your evening skincare routine is your ticket to healthy, radiant skin.

Every day our skin is exposed to environmental pollutants, UV radiation and various stressors. When we go to sleep, our skin goes into repair mode - working hard to undo all of the damage it’s built up during the day. But when our pores are clogged, it can’t fully perform its regenerative functions.

This is where evening skincare comes in! With a consistent routine, we provide our skin with the toolkit it needs to effectively cleanse, repair and rejuvenative itself overnight.

Medical Skincare Vs Drugstore Skincare - What's The Difference?

Over-the-counter products are a great starting point for your evening skincare routine. However, they rarely compare to medical grade options. They contain lower concentrations of active ingredients, and are often formulated with fragrances that can be irritating to sensitive skin.

In contrast, medical grade skincare is packed with higher concentrations of potent ingredients that are scientifically proven to deliver results. These products offer targeted solutions for a range of skincare concerns - including acne, ageing and pigmentation - rather than a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach.

At Secret Skin Aesthetics, ZO Skin Health is our medical-grade range of choice.

Your Evening Skincare Routine

Your evening skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, achieving healthy skin only involves five simple steps!

Step 1 - Cleanser

Cleansing is the cornerstone of every evening skincare routine. It removes dirt, oil, makeup and impurities from the skin’s surface to help subsequent products absorb more effectively.

There are different cleansers to suit different skin types and needs, including:

  • Gel water-based cleansers for oily and combination skin.

  • Creamy cleansers for dry and sensitive skin.

  • Oil cleansers for dissolving makeup, sun cream and oils.

  • Micellar water-based cleansers for a quick, no rinse option.

We recommend ZO’s Gentle Cleanser for removing makeup, oil and dirt, followed by ZO’s Exfoliating Cleanser for targeting dead skin cells and pores without stripping the skin of moisture.

Step 2 - Toner

Next up is toning - a step that further primes your skin to absorb the important ingredients you’re going to apply later on. Toners tighten pores, remove any residual traces of cleanser and help to refine the skin’s texture. When enriched with natural ingredients like witch hazel, chamomile or rose water, toners can even soothe and hydrate enflamed or sensitive skin.

We recommend ZO’s Calming Toner, a pH balanced toner that removes impurities and revitalises weak and damaged skin.

Step 3 - Eye Cream

Once your skin is clean, it’s time to turn your attention to the delicate eye area. Unlike a standard moisturiser, eye cream is specifically designed to hydrate this sensitive area, reduce puffiness and minimise the appearance of dark circles and fine lines. They often contain peptides for plumping and caffeine for brightening.

We recommend ZO’s Intense Eye Creme for its anti-ageing and de-puffing properties.

Step 4 - Serums

Serums are powerhouse products packed with powerful ingredients that target specific skincare concerns. These lightweight formulations penetrate deep into the skin, delivering actives directly to the cells.

There’s countless serums to choose from, but some of the most effective include:

  • Hyaluronic Acid - Draws water to the skin’s surface for the ultimate hydration.

  • Vitamin C - An effective antioxidant that helps to brighten the skin.

  • Retinol - Neutralises the free radicals in the middle layer of the skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and large pores.

  • Niacinamide - An anti-inflammatory that balances uneven skin tone and reduces the appearance of acne.

  • AHA’s - Water-soluble acids that hydrate the skin.

  • BHA’s - Oil-soluble acids that unclog pores.

  • Salicylic - Exfoliates and resurfaces the skin to target acne.

Remember, you shouldn't use every serum - just the ones that address your specific skin concerns. We recommend ZO’s Retinol Serum, ZO’s Brightalive and ZO’s Firming Serum.

Step 5 - Moisturiser

Finally, it’s time to lock in all of the benefits of your evening skincare routine with a great moisturiser. A crucial step for maintaining skin hydration, moisturising creams replenish your skin’s barrier. They prevent dehydration and keep your skin soft, smooth and healthy.

We recommend ZO’s Radical Night Repair. Formulated with 1% retinol, it improves skin texture, uneven pigmentation and minimises the appearance of fine lines.
